Establishing a connection is at the heart of effective communication. It’s how we build trust, influence decisions, and move organizations forward. But those same connections can also move us forward and that’s exactly what IABC Calgary’s Mentorship Program is designed to do.

Last year, independent communications and engagement consultant Sanita Dhillon-Shapka, MA, SCMP®, joined the IABC mentorship program to help support others. Her goal was to give others the support she lacked at the start of her career.

“I signed up to be a mentor to help others deal with some of the barriers and struggles that I also went through,” she says. “I want to uplift new communications professionals in the way that my mentors did for me.”

A Match That Made a Difference

Sanita’s mentee, a new graduate, contributed fresh viewpoints and unique experiences while embracing their connection.

For Sanita, the pairing was meaningful on a personal level.

“I think that being able to have honest conversations about some topics is so valuable, especially for women. For example, I was able to share the information I learned from my business mentors related to salary negotiations, which I think is important to pass along.”

Mentorship as a Two-Way Learning Experience

Sanita describes the relationship as being equal.

“Mentors need mentoring, and mentees act as mentors as well. I learned just as much from my mentee as she may have learned from me.”

She further adds that listening to her mentee’s experiences was helpful during her own career transition. Sanita returned to work earlier this year after an 18-month maternity leave. She found it meaningful to discuss the realities of career transitions, new approaches and tools in communications, and new models for group learning.

And for busy professionals wondering if they have time?

“You get to meet someone new and just have a conversation,” she says. “It’s such a small amount of time to set aside for helping each other.”

Empower Growth. Encourage Others.
