    Job Summary
    The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing high-quality communications that advance Calgary’s economic narrative. This role focuses on creating clear, consistent and compelling messaging across corporate, executive and media-facing channels.

    The Communications Specialist monitors political, economic and social trends to identify timely storytelling opportunities, develops key messages to support media inquiries and contributes to communications strategies that strengthen reputation and understanding among diverse audiences.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with the Communications team to understand, evaluate, develop and deliver effective communication plans.
    • Develop and deliver high-quality content for multiple audiences and channels, including longform articles, social copy, newsletters, press releases, key messages, speaking remarks, executive communications and promotional materials.
    • Ensure adherence to brand and editorial standards across all communications materials.
    • Act as a trusted brand steward, promoting CED and Calgary’s economic narrative through consistent messaging and collaboration with internal teams and external partners.
    • Monitor political, economic and social trends to identify opportunities for timely storytelling across channels.
    • Identify relevant data and develop clear, accurate key messages to support media requests.
    • Plan and execute social media strategies (LinkedIn, X, Blue Sky), leveraging platform algorithms and emerging trends to maximize engagement, analyze performance and provide insights to inform future content.
    • Support media relations and requests.
    • Build strong relationships with creative and digital agencies, internal and external partners.

    Education
    Undergraduate degree in Communications, Public Relations or a related field.

    Experience
    Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public relations and/or journalism.
    Experience supporting executive communications, media relations or issues-based communications in a corporate or public-sector environment.

    Key Competencies

    • Exceptional editing and proofreading skills, with an understanding of Canadian Press style.
    • Extensive understanding of communications principles and experience writing website and social media content, speeches, newsletters, key messages, presentations and press releases.
    • Strong research and interview skills with proven ability to distill complex information.
    • Critical thinking and strong problem-solving skills.
    • Sound relationship-building skills and demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with peers, other departments, media, community partners and government officials.
    • Social media savvy with experience producing analytics reports and insights.
    • Technical knowledge of Windows XP, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Experience uploading and editing content in various content management systems (CMS) and email marketing platforms (HubSpot).
    • Excellent project management skills with demonstrated success in planning, organizing and managing projects; experience with Monday.com is an asset.
    • Ability to work under pressure with competing deadlines and handle multiple priorities at once.
