I first discovered the IABC in 2020, during one of the most demanding periods of my career, while leading crisis communications for the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control amid the COVID-19 pandemic. At such a time of immense uncertainty, IABC offered something rare: a trusted global community of communicators willing to share knowledge, experience and support. Through the IABC West African Interest Group, I formed connections that remain central to my professional life today.

“One IABC connection directly led to my first role in Canada. Membership matters!”

When I moved to Canada in September 2020, that sense of community became even more meaningful. Starting over in a new country during a pandemic can feel isolating, but IABC/Calgary provided an immediate sense of belonging. Through virtual coffee chats and member connections, I met communications professionals across Alberta and Canada. One of those conversations led directly to my first role in Canada. Many others led to mentorship, encouragement and lasting professional relationships. IABC made an unfamiliar place feel navigable.

“At a time of uncertainty, IABC gave me a trusted global community of communicators ready to share knowledge and support.”

Serving on the IABC/Calgary board as Director of Professional Development allowed me to give back to the community that supported me. Through that experience, I built strong friendships, grew as a leader and deepened my understanding of best practices in the profession. Evaluating Gold Quill and Silver Leaf Award submissions further reinforced the value of IABC’s commitment to excellence and continuous learning.

“IABC has shaped my career, expanded my network and shown me the power of giving back to the communications community.”

Today, I pay that support forward by connecting newcomers and communications professionals who reach out for guidance. IABC has shaped my career, expanded my network and reinforced my belief in the power of community. Remaining an IABC member reflects not only what I have gained, but also my commitment to contributing to a profession that thrives when we support one another.
