We recently sat down with Caroline Lule, IABC Calgary’s president for 2024/2025. Caroline is a dynamic, strategic communications leader with over 14 years of experience across a variety of industries. She leads the IABC Calgary board with a warm professionalism and notable passion for bringing communicators together. We are pleased to share our interview with Caroline below and hope it inspires you to connect with us!

Q: Please share an interesting fact or hobby of yours!

A: I recently started salsa dancing, which is a great stress reliever.

Q: Why are you an IABC member? What value or benefits do you see in the membership?

A: I joined the IABC to connect with and learn from my peers, grow and hone my skills, and stay informed about the latest trends in the industry—and it’s been one of the best decisions I could have made for my career. The relationships I’ve built have not only helped me grow as a professional but have also opened doors to new opportunities and roles. Like any membership, the value you gain depends on the time and effort you invest, and I’ve found that active involvement leads to greater benefits for members.

Q: As IABC Calgary’s current President, how do you see the role of IABC Calgary in supporting communications professionals in our city? 

A: IABC Calgary is a community of communicators dedicated to supporting and empowering one another. Our role is to bring communicators together, offering opportunities for professional development, mentorship, and career growth. We want to be a trusted resource and help new and seasoned communicators build and advance their careers.

Q: Can you briefly tell us about how you got into the communications profession, where your career has taken you?

A: I’ve always loved the art of storytelling, and originally considered pursuing a career in journalism. While researching the various career paths open to journalism students, I discovered public relations which introduced me to the business side of storytelling – and I’ve never looked back. My career has taken me across North America and Europe, working with blue-chip clients in technology, publishing, and energy. It’s been a challenging and rewarding journey, and I love seeing how the work we do as communicators drives success for organizations.

Q: What is your best piece of advice for others in the profession?

A: This advice isn’t new but remains true: never stop growing and learning. Stay on top of trends in business, politics and culture — it helps us become more well-rounded communicators. Also, have a plan but be open to unexpected opportunities and challenges that come your way, that’s when the most growth happens.

Q: What is the most important skill you have developed in your career?

A: The ability to build strong, productive relationships and work collaboratively to deliver solutions.

Q: What is the best part of having a career in communications?

A: Helping businesses communicate strategically to address real issues, tell stories that matter, and influence the right people. We have a seat at the table when it comes to communicating about reputation, culture, strategy, and change. I love seeing how communications can support business operations internally and externally.

Q: How do you stay on top of current trends and adapt to new technologies?

A: To stay on top of current trends and adapt to new technologies, I use a variety of sources:

  • Podcasts from The Economist and The New York Times to stay informed about global events and trends.
  • Checking LinkedIn weekly to hear from communications leaders and stay updated on day-to-day industry developments.
  • Investing in formal training on emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to enhance my skills.
  • Attending the IABC World Conference to learn from peers and stay up to date on best practices.
  • Logging my professional development activities annually to maintain my Communication Management Professional (CMP) certification and keep myself accountable.

Q: What advice would you give to someone new to the industry and to Canada?

A: Be patient and determined and take advantage of every opportunity. Build your network and actively use it. Attend professional events, upskill, and stay on top of emerging trends. Progress may not always be fast or easy, but the skills and experience you gain along the way will be invaluable—and you’ll eventually achieve your goals.
