Vanessa Thompson is a communications professional with a diverse career background. A former print journalist, Vanessa spent nine years working at major news outlets in Canada and the U.S. including the Toronto Star, The Buffalo News and Reuter. Though the fast-paced world of print news was rewarding, Vanessa wanted something new that would still lend to her passion for storytelling and strategy development. In 2008, Vanessa made the leap and began a career in the field of communications.
Most recently, Vanessa worked in Media Relations and Issues with Metrolinx, a provincial transportation agency in Toronto. A high point in her career occurred during the floods of 2013 in Toronto when she was responsible for crisis communications and issues management. The Humber River had flooded a portion of the train tracks during rush-hour and Vanessa kept a cool head while responding to calls from over 50 media outlets across the globe. Though the immediate issue was soon resolved, the experience left a mark on Vanessa she will not soon forget.
In 2014 Vanessa moved to Calgary with her husband. While pursuing various job leads, she became a member of the IABC Calgary Chapter and as a volunteer she is now the membership retention manager of the membership committee. In this role Vanessa has taken on new tasks such as the chimp system, and has communicated with lapsed and lapsing members, as well as Calgary members with upcoming anniversaries in a timely fashion.
Vanessa has found her involvement with IABC to be worthwhile. She has appreciated opportunities such as professional development, webinar learning and globally recognized certification. In particular, Vanessa looks forward to networking with likeminded professionals at IABC events throughout the year. Vanessa is a valued team member and we look forward to seeing her in the future.
