By Natasha Qereshniku, IABC/Calgary Past President

Amidst a crazy year, volunteering the little downtime you do have to be Vice President of IABC/Calgary may feel like a big ask. Especially in a capacity that requires a little more time than your average volunteer opportunity. I hear you and I’ve been there, but just like my colleagues of IABC’s past, I’m here to make you think twice before shutting the door on this excellent opportunity.

From personal experience, I can tell you being an IABC/Calgary executive opens up your professional and personal network, exposes you to ideas and solutions you wouldn’t normally come across in your day-to-day, and solidifies your skills as a leader amongst fellow communicators.

IABC members, fondly called IABCers, are a group of positive, passionate and knowledgeable communications professionals from all walks of life. The personal and professional growth you will gain from leading a talented board to provide for these amazing members, will empower you to do things you may not have thought yourself capable to do.

Volunteering in any capacity can be hugely fulfilling, but it’s especially rewarding when you are doing so in a leadership role within your profession. IABC is a safe place to lead volunteers who are themselves leaders and supporters of your growth, and tap into networks locally, regionally and internationally. So, while you’re leading a chapter to better serve our Calgary members, you’re also gaining a support group who will be there for you when the going gets tough.

Don’t underestimate the power of paying it forward, because it’s true what they say, the people you surround yourself with can make all the difference, so why not surround yourself with the best?
